Happy Anniversary Sylvia & King Ronald of Buganda

Today is the 10th Anniversary of the wedding of the Kabaka (‘King’) of Buganda, Ronald Mutebi II and his ‘American’ wife, NYU graduate Sylvia.

Buganda is one of 4 Kingdoms in the country of Uganda, which most westerners know only through the dictatorship of Idi Amin. It was the most powerful kingdom – ‘Uganda’ is it’s Swahili name – but it’s social and political structure, including the 600-year-old monarchy, was dismantled by the British (the monarchy was restored in 1993).

The first royal wedding in Uganda in 50 years took place in Kampala (where is that?), and was marked by a lavish ceremony and great celebration throughout the country – not just for the wedding, but because the King gave everyone permission to break a tribal tradition – that no one but the royal couple should have sex on his wedding night! (Tradition has it that any man who fails to resist temptation on the Kabaka’s wedding day will be attacked by a sheep and become impotent).

The King controversially did follow another tradition – he symbolically married a 13 year-old virgin girl before the main wedding ceremony. The virgin bride usually remains a virgin for life, with some ceremonial functions, such as announcing the king’s death and calling an end to the communal mourning period. However Bugandan officials say teenager Sarah Nsobya’s life will be unchanged.

Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II was 45 on his wedding day, and many citizens had despaired that he would not leave an heir. His choice of a bride was controversial – Sylvia Nagginda Luswata, an 38-year old aristocratic Ugandan who graduated from New York University, comes from a clan called ‘Edible Rat’, whose traditional role has been caring for washrooms; worse yet, she was considered ‘American’. Born in Britain, she had spent the last 18 years in the United States, mostly in New York. She had worked as a research consultant at the United Nations and at the World Bank in Washington.

Joy and cultural pride carried the day, however, and the country went cuckoo for the royal wedding. The royal couple’s faces were printed on beer cans, sponsors fell all over themselves trying to get involved, and men with leopard skins and spears danced outside the Anglican church. Two people were suffocated to death in the large crowds trying to get close to the ceremony, but they weren’t particularly lamented in the general jubilation.

Bugandans have since taken Sylvia to their heart, and Ronald has used his status to encourage his people to participate in immunization and AIDS programs, and has been outspoken in encouraging public and private education. Superstars in their troubled homeland (Ronald’s position is more ceremonial than political), people prostrate themselves on the roadside when they pass, and follow their every word and action closely in the Ugandan tabloids.

They now have four children, one son and three daughters.

Cecil Green Park House – a great venue choice

Sweet Thea is pleased to be added to Cecil Green Park’s list of preferred Service Providers, giving us the opportunity to bring our delicious cakes to one of the most beautiful wedding sites in British Columbia. This beautiful house, high on the cliffs of Point Grey, was built in 1912, and is now named for the kind folks who donated this very special place to the University of British Columbia.

Gorgeous gardens and a spectacular view from three levels of terraces provide a magnificent vista, while the interior – oak, walnut, and rosewood, with inlaid hardwood floors, bay windows, stained glass and multiple fireplaces – is a dream location for a wedding in Vancouver. The venue is best for medium sized weddings, as the capacity is up to 200 for wedding ceremonies only or for stand-up receptions with casual seating, or up to 140 for sit-down receptions with either buffet or table service.

A sweet surprise from Mike and Vanessa

Last Friday I picked up Polly, my Smart Car with her brand new paint job, drove her downtown and parked near the Vancouver Club. Later in the day, when I picked up the car again, I was surprised and delighted to find an envelope on the windshield, marked ‘To Thea from Sweet Thea *I tried to send this to you b4 xmas but it was returned to us”. It was a wonderful card from Vanessa and Mike that I want to share with you: Now isn’t that wonderful!! I was already on Cloud 9 because of Polly’s pretty new paint job, and then .. this! I was giddy happy all weekend – thank you Vanessa and Mike – and congratulations you happy lovers!!! (Sherri Koop also sent us some photos of Vanessa & Mike’s wedding – here)

Sweet Thea – preferred vendor at beautiful Brock House

Sweet Thea is delighted to be a preferred vendor at the Brock House Restaurant, one of the most beautiful wedding venues in B.C. – on beautiful Jericho Beach, with a grand vista of the Pacific Ocean and North Shore mountains. (There are fabulous photos of Brock House on their website).

Last weekend, I went with Thea as she set up a cake for a wedding, and snapped a couple photos of this ideal wedding location, to share with you:

The grounds are spacious, and charming – the grand towering trees and beautiful gardens are alive with the joyful cries of many birds, the ocean breeze is warm and invigorating, all the staff are helpful and smiling.. a wonderful place to be on a summer afternoon.

'Classic' cake from Sweet Thea - simple and delicious!

Daniela Ciuffa, fotografo eccezionale

I am blessed to know many excellent wedding photographers in the Vancouver area; a few weeks ago one of them – Daniela Ciuffa, of Ciuffa Photography, came by the house and, with a little wine-and-cheese as reward, took some wonderful photographs of Sweet Thea cakes for the upcoming season. I picked up the results today, and they are simply fabulous!

The title of this post means ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Exceptional’ Photographer in Italian, which is an appropriate way to introduce her! Her skill and talent are very obvious in the shots created for me, which I will be using on this blog and throughout the year. I was so pleased that I re-visited her website, and am glad I did. She has some outstanding work in her on-line galleries, divided into subjects of family, commercial, weddings, portraits, and journalism. Collectively it is impressive work, showing a real talent with keen eye and deft composition skills, and striking immediacy in her journalism work.

Of course, every photographer puts good work in their gallery; and it would be easy to assume that are her best work. It is only when you check out Daniela’s blog that you see that she is routinely taking great photos - outstanding results are standard for her! Here are a few I liked from recent posts – you can tell that children love being photographed by her, and that she has a great ability to capture a moment perfectly -
