Sugar Flowers from Around the World

Posted on by laurie

sugarflowersaroundtheworld2‘An inspirational source book for sugarcraft artists’ is the subtitle of this, another excellent book by sugarwork’s most-published author.  This is a brilliant technical book, beautiful to browse, with incredibly detailed instructions for almost 50 types of flowers.

The contents are divided by geographic area: for example, Japan has Blossom, Peony, Japanese Maple, Chrysanthemum, Iris and Magnolia.  There are all the types popular for wedding decor – gardenia, hisbiscus, orchid, rose – and some fabulously interesting exotic types, like the South African Flame Lily or Tahiti’s Frangipani.

I would love to use this book.  Love love love.  But, sadly, there is no urgency for me to learn these, as the cost involved is prohibitive for most wedding planners, especially considering the real flowers can often be had cheaper.  For example, a cascade of sugar orchids down a cake would probably add $600-800 to the final cost, much more expensive than real orchids from a quality florist.

Sigh.  So, I am not sure if I will ever get to do any of these wonderful designs.  Hey – if you are reading this while planning a wedding, and you have a budget – PLEASE hire me to add some of these sugar flowers to your cake!  I will definitely post the pictures here, and link to your wedding blog or facebook page – ok?

Until then, I can only hope someday I get the time to make a sugar Tigerlily, or even a Thistle, using this wonderful resource.
